Everything You Need to Know About Fixing a Creaking Scooter Headset

If your Chilli Pro Scooter makes creaking noises while riding, it’s often a sign that something in the headset isn’t running smoothly. Don’t worry — this issue usually sounds worse than it is and can be fixed with a few simple steps. In this guide, we’ll show you how to repair creaking noises in your headset yourself.

Why Is My Stunt Scooter Creaking?

Creaking noises on your scooter often come from:

  • Dry or dirty headset bearings
  • Loose components in the compression system (e.g., HIC, IHC, SCS)
  • Incorrect assembly or misaligned parts

Good news: You can disassemble the headset, grease it, and reassemble it correctly yourself.

Tools & Materials You’ll Need

  • Allen keys (for clamp & compression system)
  • Flathead screwdriver (for prying)
  • Rubber mallet (optional)
  • Silicone grease or silicone paste (alternatively: silicone spray)
  • Cloth or paper towels for cleaning
  • Optional: new bearings (if yours are damaged)

Step-by-Step Guide: Eliminating Headset Noise on Your Scooter

1. Secure Your Scooter
Place your scooter on a stable surface or mount it in a work stand so you can work safely.

2. Remove the Handlebar and Compression System

  • Loosen the clamp bolts with an Allen key.
  • Pull off the handlebar.
  • Depending on your system (HIC, IHC, SCS), loosen the compression bolt to access the headset.

3. Remove the Fork and Bearings

  • Take out the fork and set it aside.
  • Carefully pry out the headset bearings with a screwdriver, making sure not to damage them if you plan to reuse them.

4. Clean & Grease the Headset

  • Thoroughly clean the bearing cups inside the deck from dirt, dust, and old grease.
  • Apply a generous amount of silicone grease or paste inside the bearing cups. This will ensure smooth riding and prevent new noises.
Tip: Paste lasts longer than spray and sticks better.

5. Reinsert Bearings and Assemble Correctly

  • Carefully press the bearings back in; a light tap with a rubber mallet can help.
  • Make sure the compression ring is correctly seated in the fork for HIC/IHC systems — it should not sit crooked or on the slot, as this can cause creaking.

6. Reassemble Everything

  • Put the fork, compression system, and handlebar back in place.
  • Tighten all bolts firmly but carefully. Follow the recommended torque specs.
  • Test your scooter — the creaking should be gone!

Conclusion: A Quiet Scooter with Minimal Effort

Creaking in your stunt scooter usually isn’t a big deal — most of the time it’s just dry bearings or misaligned parts. With some patience and the right tools, you can have your scooter running quietly again in just minutes.

Tip from Chilli Pro Riders: Perform headset maintenance every few months — especially if you ride tricks regularly or spend a lot of time in skateparks.
